What is Taekwon-Do?

Taekwon-Do is a modern system of self-defence developed in 1955 in Korea. The father and founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong Hi, researched other martial arts and used principles of modern science to design techniques which have maximum power and effectiveness.

Having grown in popularity, Taekwon-Do is now taught in nearly every country in the world. While it is renowned for its spectacular and dynamic kicks, it also provides 3000 techniques using both legs and arms, as well as basic grappling and throwing moves. The range of techniques caters for all types of situations, including defending against several opponents and weapons.

Why Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do School?

Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do School was established in 2001 by Mr Howard Mayes (IV Degree). Mr Mayes started Taekwon-Do nearly 40 years ago under Mr Ed Chow. He achieved his 1st Degree in March 1990, after which he opened his first clubs in East Grinstead and Crowborough. Fast forward three decades, and he is now an international instructor, competition coach, A-class umpire, and founder of a successful martial arts school in Brighton and Hove, training under Grand Master Nardizzi (IX Degree), former president of ITF England and one of the world’s youngest Grand Master.

Mr Mayes brings his wealth of experience, dedication to his students, and passion for the art to each of his classes. Over the years, he has produced many black belts, ranging from 1st to 4th Degree. Having himself competed at national level, he has taken several of his students to world class level, helping them get selected to the England team to compete at European and World Championships.

The club is affiliated to the governing body International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) and part of the TKD Impact association. It offers 10 classes a week across Brighton and Hove to accommodate the busiest schedules.
