Over the years I’ve had a large number of students who try and make it back to training after a long break from Taekwon-Do.
I took 5 years out when I was 31 and I found it very tough getting back into training.
When I get students coming back after a long break, I see their desire but also see their struggle.
It’s tough, when you remember how easy it was to do this technique or keep up with the fitness and now, as you are a little older, less fit, less flexible, slower reactions, it now seems so hard.
It does take a lot of determination to make it back into training. Especially now you are that much older.
I see many students now in their 20’s or 30’s who did Taekwon-Do for a long period in their teens suddenly find out what many adults always knew; this isn’t easy. Add to that, you remember, just how good you were and now it is harder to perform those fast, powerful, high kicks.
The opposite to many adults who start Taekwon-Do in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s or 50’s and work at their own pace, through the belts, and eventually become very good capable black belts.
Many people this age, who did Taekwon-Do in their teens, returning after a long break, want to get back up to their old level as fast as possible and find it hard and need patience to get there.
It is having the patience and determination to work back up through those steps, probably now at a slower pace, that many find just too hard and give up.
If you are coming back to Taekwon-Do after a long break, you need to have patience and real determination to get back to a good standard. If you stick at it you will achieve great things, probably, now older and wiser, far more than you did when you were a young student.

There is one thing I can tell everybody who starts or returns to training; it is so worthwhile, never give up!
