Brighton Martial Arts

Do you need to be flexible to learn Taekwon-Do?

THERE IS A MISCONCEPTION THAT YOU NEED TO BE FLEXIBLE TO BE GOOD AT TAEKWON-DO.

It is not a requirement to begin training or to become proficient in the art. Training in Taekwon-Do will help you improve flexibility, but flexibility is not necessarily a prerequisite to start.

Flexibility can be a useful attribute to develop in your Taekwondo, and through your training you will develop gradually over time with regular practice. At Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do you will learn various stretching and mobility exercises to develop your flexibility and if practiced you will significantly improve your range of motion.

To be good at Taekwon-Do you do not need to be able to kick 3 feet above your own head, although doing so can look exciting and practicing kicks head height and above can feel very satisfying. It is much better to be able to kick with power anything above knee height. For self-defence a powerful kick delivered to the knee or groin is often more effective than trying to land a shot to the chin.

Ultimately, while flexibility can certainly enhance your martial arts training, it is not an absolute requirement for starting or excelling in martial arts and over time you will improve your flexibility to a significant degree.
