Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do 6

When I think back over the last 30 years as a martial arts instructor, I feel a deep sense of gratitude and pride in the journey I’ve shared with so many young people. From those first nervous steps into the dojang (martial arts training hall) to the confident, disciplined individuals I’ve seen walk across the stage to take their black belts, every moment has been incredibly rewarding.

I began teaching children in Taekwon-Do because I believed in the art itself, its values, its traditions, and its capacity to transform lives. What I didn’t realise at the start was just how much I would learn from the children themselves. Their determination, resilience and ability to celebrate each other’s successes has shaped the way I teach, and the way I see the world.

Over the years I’ve watched shy children blossom into assured young adults. I’ve seen pupils who struggled with focus find real self-discipline. I’ve seen children who lacked confidence stand tall with pride after learning a new pattern, a new kick, or passing their grading. These are the moments that remind me why teaching martial arts is not just a job; it’s a calling.

Parents often ask me, “What will my child get out of Taekwon-Do?” Here’s how I see it:

self-confidence
Martial arts gives children a sense of accomplishment. Every new skill learned, every belt earned, and every challenge faced helps build their belief in themselves.

self-discipline
Taekwon-Do teaches children how to set goals and work steadily towards them. They learn that improvement comes from effort, practice and patience, lessons that carry into school life and beyond.

self-esteem
Success in martial arts is not just about physical ability; it’s about growing as a person. Children learn to respect themselves and others, to stand with integrity, and to handle both success and setbacks with grace.

fitness
In a world where screens often replace active play, Taekwon-Do gets children moving in a fun and structured way. They build strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and endurance, all while enjoying themselves.

self-defence skills
Knowing how to protect themselves gives children a practical sense of safety and awareness. More importantly, it teaches them that self-defence is about prevention, respect and control, not aggression.

Every child who walks through our doors at Taekwon-Do Brighton & Hove brings something unique, and it has been a privilege to be a part of their development. I’ve watched siblings train together, friends push each other to do their best, and parents beam with pride as their children achieve things they never thought possible.

If you are a parent wondering whether martial arts might be right for your child, I would say this: Taekwon-Do is an investment in their growth. It strengthens the body, sharpens the mind, and nurtures the heart. The skills they learn here will support them long after they hang up their dobok (Taekwon-Do training suit).

Thank you to every student and family who has been part of this journey. I look forward to many more years of helping young people grow with confidence, discipline, fitness and respect.
