Top 7 Myths About Martial Arts (and Why They’re Wrong)
Martial arts have been around for centuries, but many people still have the wrong idea about what training is really like. At Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do, we often hear the same myths from people who are curious but unsure about trying a class.
Let’s clear up some of the most common myths and show why martial arts are for everyone.
- “You have to be fit before you start”
This is one of the biggest myths. You don’t need to be fit, flexible, or athletic to begin martial arts. The whole point of training is to improve your fitness gradually. Our classes at Brighton and Hove are designed for people of all levels. You start at your own pace and build strength, balance, and coordination over time. We are patient and work with you.

- “Martial arts are violent”
Martial arts are actually about control and respect, not aggression. Students learn how to manage emotions, avoid conflict, and use techniques responsibly. The focus is on discipline, self-control, and personal growth. Children and adults alike often become calmer and more confident through training, not more aggressive.
- “Only young people can do martial arts”
It’s never too late to start. Many of our students join as adults, and some begin in their 40s, 50s, or even 60s and one or two in the 70s. Training is adaptable to each person’s ability. We focus on movement, flexibility, and technique rather than extreme physical intensity. Age really is just a number.
- “It’s too dangerous”
When taught properly, martial arts are very safe. At Brighton & Hove Taekwon-Do, we use structured lessons, controlled techniques, and full supervision. Protective gear is introduced when needed, and students learn safety from day one. In fact, martial arts injuries are far less common than in contact sports like rugby or football.

- “You need to be flexible”
Flexibility improves through training; it’s not a requirement to start. Every class includes stretching and mobility exercises that help your body adapt naturally. You’ll notice big improvements in a few months just by turning up regularly.
- “Martial arts are only for boys”
This couldn’t be further from the truth. Many of our most dedicated students are girls and women who love the confidence and empowerment that Taekwon-Do gives them. Martial arts promote equality, respect, and teamwork. Everyone trains together and supports each other.
- “It’s all about fighting”
Martial arts training is about self-development, not just self-defence. You’ll learn focus, respect, goal setting, perseverance, and self-belief. These skills help in everyday life, school, work, and relationships. The physical techniques are only part of the journey.
